New research suggests administering molecular Hydrogen, an antioxidant, orally via Hydrogen water may offer therapeutic value to Pulmonary Hypertension patients.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a condition caused by increased pressure in the pulmonary arteries. In advanced cases, its symptoms (shortness of breath, tiredness, chest pain) worsen and may limit all physical activity.

Many factors account for the disease, and the most-used therapies rely on vasodilators of several kinds. However, the traditional treatments have failed to block disease progress effectively. Thus, a search for new treatments is actively underway.

In patients with PH, there is a significant increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS), a condition named Oxidative Stress. Their accumulation can seriously damage cells, and so treatment of PH patients with antioxidants has proven to be effective. Notably, however, high doses of nonselective antioxidants (i.e., antioxidants that can bind multiple receptors in several different places in the body) can have detrimental effects, such as inducing hemorrhage. Therefore, selective antioxidants are a safer and more efficient therapy to PH patients.

Molecular hydrogen (H2) is a selective antioxidant because it selectively reduces two specific ROS (hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite), without affecting what is now described as physiological ROS (i.e., ROS that is beneficial and necessary for cells’ survival).

In cases of ischemia/reperfusion injury (a condition that generates inflammation and oxidative stress), H2 has shown protective effects by selectively binding to damaging ROS. In the study, the authors proposed to investigate whether H2 was also effective in PH treatment. The authors generated a rat model of PH by injecting monocrotaline (a toxin that induces pulmonary hypertension). Additionally, the authors evaluated two ways of administrating H2 – intraperitoneal injection and oral administration (via hydrogen water).

The team found that when compared to the control group, H2 prevented the development of PH and reversed RV hypertrophy. Accordingly with previous studies, the therapeutic effect of H2 was related to its antioxidant (particularly by inhibiting a byproduct of the damaging ROS peroxynitrite) and anti-inflammatory activities. Additionally, both H2 delivery methods – intraperitoneal injection and oral administration — were equally effective. Although previous studies reported antioxidants could effectively reduce PH, its use in clinical therapeutics is rare.

The authors now propose that selective antioxidants is an effective treatment of PH and oral administration is an efficient vehicle for therapeutics, since they are less expensive and offer a longer-release time for the effector molecule.

Bottled water is the world’s best-selling drink, and Americans are its most loyal customer. You pay hundreds or even thousands of times more for the prepackaged water than you would if you got it from the tap. Yet nothing has proved that “ultra-purified,” “mountain-sourced,” “glacial-runoff,” or “oasis-obtained” water is any better for you.

What we do know is that bottled water takes a lot more energy, resources, and—yes—water to produce and transport. That takes a toll on the environment and your health.

Below are a few of the lowlights for water bottles:

Plastic Bottles Can Raise Your Blood Pressure

A recent study examined the effects of bisphenol A, or BPA, a chemical compound found widely in water bottles and soda-can linings. BPA has been associated with everything from heart disease to lowered sperm counts in men. In this study, people who drank from a BPA-lined container experienced a rise in blood pressure within two hours. People who drank from a BPA-free glass saw no change in blood pressure.

Recently, bottling manufacturers have been moving away from BPA and switching to the “safe substitute” bisphenol-S, or BPS. But new research is showing that BPS could cause its own health issues, including hyperactivity.

Bottled Water Probably Isn’t as Clean as Tap Water

The label on that plastic water bottle may say “Triple-purified, virgin water source,” but in the United States, the water-bottling industry is nowhere near as strictly regulated as your local tap is. That’s because the Environmental Protection Agency oversees tap water safety, while the Food and Drug Administration regulates bottled water.

Simply put, one government agency has more power than the other. While local water agencies regularly test tap water and release the results to the public, a survey of 188 bottled-water brands found that only two made that kind of information available to the public.

Billions of Bottles Are Adding to the World’s Pile of Plastic Debris

The U.S. recycles just 12 percent of the 32 million tons of plastic waste it generates each year. We’re also consuming almost 10 billion gallons of water from bottles each year, but only one of every five of those bottles is recycled. That’s leading to a large percentage of plastics clogging landfills or washing away into the ocean.

Water bottles, straws, toys, coffee-cup lids, and other plastic trash degrade into microscopic bits that end up in the bellies of multiple marine animals, causing thousands of deaths each year. Cleaning up the mess once it reaches the ocean is expensive. Cleanup projects on West Coast beaches alone cost an estimated $500 million annually.

Bottled-Water Companies Are Sourcing From Drought-Stricken California

As California endures another year of a record drought, major water-bottling companies are catching flak for tapping what’s left of California’s water for themselves. Food and beverage giant Nestlé’s Arrowhead brand has been pumping water out of California’s San Bernardino National Forest—750 million gallons in 2014—despite an expired permit.

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is doing it too, and it says it would pump more if it could. This comes even as Gov. Jerry Brown tells the state’s residents to cut water usage by 25 percent.

Several Brands of Bottled Water Recalled

Several Brands of Bottled Water Recalled

Niagara Bottling is recalling its bottled water products after one of its spring sources was contaminated with E. coli.

The company is urging customers to avoid drinking the water without boiling it first. The water should be boiled for one minute and then cooled. While it was not immediatley clear how widely the products were distributed, several major supermarket chains with stores across the northeast issued releases saying they had carried the water.

E. coli can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches and other symptoms. Niagara says it has not received any complaints of injury or illness.

The company says the contamination was discovered in the water supply on June 10, but the spring source did not notify it in a timely manner, so they have stopped using the source.

The contaminated water was sold under the following brand names:
7-Eleven
Acadia
Acme
Big Y
Best Yet
Morning Fresh
Niagara
Nature’s Place
Pricerite
Shaw’s
Shoprite
Superchill
Western Beef Blue
Wegman’s

All spring water products produced at the company’s facilities in Hamburg and Allentown, Pennsylvania between 3 a.m. June 10 to 8 p.m. June 18 were recalled.

Niagara Bottling did not immediately respond to media inquiries, but several supermarkets sent out press releases addressing the recall. Bottled water products were recalled at ACME Markets in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania; at Shaw’s grocery stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont; and at Wegmans grocery stores, which operate in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Affected products have codes that start with the letter F or A. The first digit after the letter indicates the number of the production line. The next two numbers indicate the day, then the month in letters, the year, and then the time, based on a 24-hour clock.

DO YOU DRINK BOTTLED WATER? — BPA Exposure Could Make Future Generations Infertile

The reproductive damage caused by exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) like bisphenol-A (BPA) may take several generations after initial exposure to become evident, according to new research out of Missouri.

A team of biological scientists and toxicologists determined that, even when exposure to BPA doesn’t show immediate health consequences, the second, third, and even fourth generations afterwards can experience reduced fertilization and increased embryo mortality.

Using medaka, or Japanese rice fish, as test subjects, scientists evaluated the effects of BPA and several other EDCs during one week of embryonic development. They then looked at the offspring of these exposed fish throughout the course of four subsequent generations, as Japanese rice fish have shorter generations that are ideal for this type of research.

Interestingly, the first two generations of fish showed no evidence signs of reproductive abnormalities. But the third and fourth generations did, with the third generation showing a 30 percent decrease in fertilization, and the fourth generation showing a 20 percent decrease in fertilization.

None of the subsequent generations of medaka were directly exposed to BPA or the other EDCs, either. They were all indirectly exposed via their ancestors, which somehow passed down the reproductive damage caused by BPA and other EDCs to their offspring.

“BPA has been proven to mimic the function of natural hormones in animals and humans,” stated Ramji Bhandari, an assistant research professor of biological sciences at the University of Missouri and a visiting scientist with the USGS, and one of the study’s authors, about the findings.

“Fish and aquatic organisms often have the greatest exposure to such chemicals during critical periods in their development or even throughout entire life cycles. This study shows that even though endocrine disruptors may not affect the life of the exposed fish, it may negatively affect future generations.”

BPA shown to damage stem cells in human males responsible for healthy sperm production

The study, which was published in the journal Scientific Reports, is backed by earlier research on BPA, including a paper published in the online journal PLOS Genetics.

Washington State University (WSU) geneticist Patricia Hunt found that even very low-level exposure to BPA mimics the activity of estrogen inside the body. For males, this can result in decreased sperm counts and infertility over time, as well as alterations to the master stem cells responsible for producing healthy sperm.

BPA and other estrogen mimickers are “not simply affecting sperm being produced now, but impacting the stem cell population,” stated Hunt about her findings. “And that will affect sperm produced throughout the lifetime.”

Cohort of published science proves BPA destroys fertility, but FDA refuses to acknowledge any of it

The implications of these two examples and a number of other related studies suggests that the continued use of BPA and other EDCs in metal can linings, plastic bottles, thermal paper receipts, and various other consumer products is causing long-term damage in the reproductive capacities of both humans and animals.

And yet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) refuses to acknowledge the science on BPA, insisting instead that the chemical is completely “safe.” The result is that millions of people continue to be exposed to this and other EDCs that could eventually render that vast majority of the population infertile several generations down the line.

Such a scenario very closely resembles the plot line of the science fiction film Children of Men, in which women all over the world somehow become “mysteriously” infertile, and one lone pregnant women is ushered to safety in order to perpetuate the continuity of the human race.

Hydrogen-rich Water and Quality of Life in Cancer Patients Receiving Radiotherapy

Cancer patients receiving radiotherapy often experience fatigue and impaired quality of life (QOL). Many side effects of radiotherapy are believed to be associated with increased oxidative stress and inflammation due to the generation of reactive oxygen species during radiotherapy. Hydrogen can be administered as a therapeutic medical gas, has antioxidant properties, and reduces inflammation in tissues. This study examined whether hydrogen treatment, in the form of hydrogen-supplemented water, improved QOL in patients receiving radiotherapy. A randomized, placebo-controlled study was performed to evaluate the effects of drinking hydrogen-rich water on 49 patients receiving radiotherapy for malignant liver tumors. Hydrogen-rich water was produced by placing a metallic magnesium stick into drinking water (final hydrogen concentration; 0.55~0.65 mM). The Korean version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer’s QLQ-C30 instrument was used to evaluate global health status and QOL. The concentration of derivatives of reactive oxidative metabolites and biological antioxidant power in the peripheral blood were assessed. The consumption of hydrogen-rich water for 6 weeks reduced reactive oxygen metabolites in the blood and maintained blood oxidation potential. QOL scores during radiotherapy were significantly improved in patients treated with hydrogen-rich water compared to patients receiving placebo water. There was no difference in tumor response to radiotherapy between the two groups. Daily consumption of hydrogen-rich water is a potentially novel, therapeutic strategy for improving QOL after radiation exposure. Consumption of hydrogen-rich water reduces the biological reaction to radiation-induced oxidative stress without compromising anti-tumor effects.

This study investigated effects of hydrogen-rich water (HRW) on oxidative stress, liver function and HBV DNA in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Sixty patients with CHB were randomly assigned into routine treatment group or hydrogen treatment group in which patients received routine treatment alone or additional oral HRW (1200-1800 mL/day, twice daily), respectively, for 6 consecutive weeks. Serum oxidative stress, liver function, and HBV DNA level were detected before and after treatment. Thirty healthy subjects served as controls. When compared with controls, oxidative stress was obvious in CHB patients, and the liver function also significantly impaired. After treatment, the oxidative stress remained unchanged in routine treatment group, but markedly improved in hydrogen treatment group. The liver function was improved significantly and the HBV DNA reduced markedly after corresponding treatments. Although a significant difference was noted in the oxidative stress between two groups after treatment, the liver function and HBV DNA level were comparable after treatment and both had improved tendencies. HRW significantly attenuates oxidative stress in CHB patients, but further study with long-term treatment is required to confirm the effect of HRW on liver function and HBV DNA level.

Just about, everyone knows that Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems excel at removing water impurities, similar to distilled water they both take out the natural minerals in the water Asia and the European countries call it dead water, in some countries it is even banned, few are aware that they also remove the beneficial minerals. In fact, the reverse osmosis process removes 92-99% of beneficial calcium and magnesium. What is the big deal?

After analyzing hundreds of scientific studies concerning deminerialized or reverse osmosis water, the World Health Organization released a report stating that such water “has a definite adverse influence on the animal and human organism.”

Consumers have been so concerned with removing as many things from water as possible that they have forgotten to ask if the resulting water actually improves health or causes health problems. It is assumed that no toxins equals better health, but there is simply more to healthful water than a lack of toxins, as the World Health Organization clearly points out.

What is alarming is that consuming reverse osmosis water for even just a few months can create serious side effects. “The effects of most chemicals commonly found in drinking water manifest themselves after long exposure.” However “only a few months exposure may be sufficient ‘consumption time effects’ from water that is low in magnesium and/or calcium.

Illustrative of such short-term exposures are cases in the Czech and Slovak populations who began using reverse osmosis-based systems for final treatment of drinking water at their home taps in 2000-2002. Within several weeks or months various health complaints suggestive of acute magnesium (and possibly calcium) deficiency were reported.Among these complaints were cardiovascular disorders, tiredness, weakness or muscular cramps.” Again, serious side effects within just several weeks or months.

However, it gets even worse. Because reverse osmosis water does not have enough minerals, when it is consumed, it also leaches minerals from the body. This means that the minerals being consumed in food and vitamins are being urinated away. Less minerals consumed plus more minerals, being excreted equals serious negative side effects and big health problems. In a scientific study performed to see if minerals consumed in food can make up for the lack of minerals in reverse osmosis water, scientists concluded that “reduced mineral intake from water was not compensated by their diets…low-mineral water was responsible for an increased elimination of minerals from the body.”

“It has been adequately demonstrated that consuming water of low mineral content has a negative effect on homeostasis mechanisms, compromising the mineral and water metabolism in the body.” Consumption of reverse osmosis water “leads to the dilution of the electrolytes dissolved in the body water. Inadequate body water redistribution between compartments may compromise the function of vital organs. Side effects at the very beginning of this condition include tiredness, weakness and headache; more severe symptoms are muscular cramps and impaired heart rate.”

What about those reverse osmosis systems that add minerals back in?

One popular trend since the negative side effects of consuming reverse osmosis water emerged is the practice of adding minerals back into the reverse osmosis water. On this trend, the World Health Organization states that “possibly none of the commonly used ways of re-mineralization could be considered optimum, since the water does not contain all of its beneficial components. In the case of borderline deficiency of a given element, even the relatively low intake of the element with drinking water may play a relevant protective role.” It is practically impossible to recreate natural water with all of its minerals and trace elements from reverse osmosis treated water. Why risk the side effects of reverse osmosis water in any form if healthful alternatives are available?

Since the early 1960′s, epidemiological studies in many countries all over the world have reported that water low in calcium and magnesium is associated with increased morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease.

When used for cooking, reverse osmosis water was found to cause substantial losses of all essential elements from food (vegetables, meat, cereals). Such losses may reach up to 60 % for magnesium and calcium or even more for some other microelements (e.g., copper 66 %, manganese 70 %, cobalt 86 %). In contrast, when mineralized water is used for cooking, the loss of these elements is much lower, and in some cases, even higher calcium content was reported in food because of cooking.

In a multi-city study, women living in cities with low-mineral water more frequently showed cardiovascular changes (as measured by ECG), higher blood pressure, somatoform autonomic dysfunctions, headache, dizziness, and osteoporosis (as measured by X-ray absorptiometry) compared to those of cities with higher mineral content water.

The final report, published as an internal working document (WHO 1980), concluded that “not only does completely demineralised water (distillate) have unsatisfactory organoleptic properities, but it also has a definite adverse influence on the animal and human organism.”

More Than 24,500 Chemicals Found in Bottled Water

Bottled water has become a bit of a trend – specific brands with unique shapes that tell the world a little something about you. While your bottle of water might make you appear to be a purveyor of optimal hydration, it is also a red flag that you may be exposing your body to an onslaught of chemicals.

In a recent study by German researchers, nearly 25,000 chemicals were found lurking in a single bottle of water. Many of these chemicals mimic the effects of potent pharmaceuticals inside your body, according to the study published in the journal PLoS One.

The study was broken into two parts. For the initial portion, the researchers tested 18 samples of various commercially sold water bottles from around the globe. Through chemical analyses, they tested the water to determine if it interfered with the body’s estrogen and androgen receptors. Tap water was tested as well, for comparison. The researchers were shocked to learn that most of the bottled waters revealed interference with both kinds of hormone receptors; amounts as little as 0.1 ounces inhibited estrogenic activity by 60 percent and androgenic activity by 90 percent. The tap water, on the other hand, showed no activity on either form of receptor.

During the second part of the study, the scientists sought to pinpoint which chemicals were the cause of reproductive hormonal interferences. Using other forms of detection to isolate the various chemicals, the researchers found more than 24,500 different chemicals in the bottled waters – including two classes of chemicals, maleates and fumarates, which are known potent endocrine disruptors (hormonally active chemicals). Maleates and fumarates are utilized to manufacture plastic resins, which are used to make water bottles, and they may also appear as contaminants of other plastic chemicals.

Despite these alarming results, you don’t have to fear for your life, if you have been toting bottled waters around for years. Good hydration is important, and sometimes, there aren’t other options. As a healthy adult, the occasional sip from the “toxic fountain” of bottled water won’t kill you. However, small children, women of child-bearing age, and pregnant women are at greater risk of poor outcomes when exposed to these chemicals. Effects can include stunted growth, early puberty, premature birth, infertility and early menopause – just to name a few. The remaining population should still exercise caution, as more and more research is discovering that these chemical can also trigger diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Instead, make it a habit to carry a refillable water bottle. Many cities and states are beginning to convert water fountains to more easily accommodate refilling your water bottle. This began as an effort to protect the environment, but following this study, it would appear the benefits are dual fold. Earlier this year the FDA banned bisphenol-A (BPA), a common chemical used to make plastic bottles and linings of cans, from some food-related plastics. The ban also included baby bottles and sippy cups, though manufacturers say they had already eliminated the chemical in their products. It would seem, however, BPA isn’t the only problem when it comes to chemicals leaking into the food supply.

Take control of your health. Invest in a reusable water bottle. Choosing bottles made of nontoxic glass or stainless steel are highly recommended to ensure your health and safety. Many manufacturers have begun making glass bottles covered by a rubber cover to prevent breakage and simplify your commitment to health. And, of course there is one more benefit – by choosing to carry a refillable water bottle, you avoid that $2 plus charge every time you’re thirsty.
